Kyoto Ryokan and Hotels with a Private Onsen in the Room

Kyoto hotels and ryokan with a bath in the room: which say the water is natural hot spring, which say nothing, and which say it is not onsen, from each property's own page. Checked November 2026.

Updated November 2026

For a private onsen in the room, book a room type whose own bath the property describes as hot-spring water: HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO’s Onsen Suite, any room at FUFU Kyoto, the onsen rooms at Suiran in Arashiyama, or a room with an onsen bath at Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada. Other hotels have a private bath in every room but say nothing about the water, and a few say plainly that theirs is not onsen.

A room with its own bath has no timetable and no lamp to watch. The cost is the room rate, which these pages do not print; the booking site shows it for your dates.

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO

The hotel’s Onsen Suite is over 101 m² with “a private open-air onsen fed by natural spring water sourced on-site”. The hotel also has two other baths: a shared Thermal Spring, where bathers wear swimsuits and the water comes from a hot spring about 1,000 m below the hotel, and a Private Onsen of over 100 m² that guests book by the hour, JPY 25,000 for 60 minutes, JPY 32,000 for 90 and JPY 39,000 for 120, for one to four people, open 7am to 11pm (its own pages, November 2026). The Private Onsen is “for registered hotel guests only”; its page does not say where its water comes from.

FUFU Kyoto and Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo

FUFU Kyoto, near Nanzen-ji, says every guest room has a bath of natural hot-spring water and that it does not offer hot-spring use to non-guests (its own FAQ, November 2026). Nazuna Kyoto Nijo-jo’s five tea-themed suites each have “a private open-air/semi-open-air bath”; it calls itself a ryokan-style stay, takes guests from 13, and says nothing about the water (its own page, November 2026). So it is a private bath, not a private onsen, unless the hotel tells you otherwise.

Arashiyama

Arashiyama has two of the hotels above: Hanaikada beside Togetsukyo Bridge, with rooms that have their own onsen bath, and Suiran. Arashiyama onsen ryokan covers both, with Hanaikada’s rooftop private bath and the Kadensho hotel that closes from 1 December 2026.

The ones that are not onsen

Kyoto Takao Momijiya, in the hills at Takao, gives six annex rooms an open-air bath of their own, and its bath page marks every bath “not a hot spring” (its own page, November 2026). HIIRAGIYA in central Kyoto says it “has no hot spring” and uses groundwater drawn from beneath the inn (its own FAQ, November 2026). Both can still be a fine stay; they are just not a hot-spring soak.

Where they are

Map of Kyoto: Kyoto Station and Umekoji in the south, Nijo and Nanzen-ji in the centre and east, Omuro (Ninna-ji), Arashiyama and Takao to the west and north-west, and Kurama Onsen in the hills to the north
Nijo (HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, Nazuna), Nanzen-ji (FUFU Kyoto), Arashiyama (Hanaikada, Suiran) and Takao (Momijiya).

By road, Kyoto Station is 4.1 km from HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, 5.0 km from FUFU Kyoto and 9.4 km from Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada. For a bath without the room, see how a private bath works.
