Tattoo-Friendly Private Onsen in Kyoto
Private onsen in Kyoto with tattoos: what each property's own page says, where a private bath gets round a ban, and the public baths that welcome tattoos. Checked November 2026.
With tattoos, a private bath is the simplest way to soak in Kyoto: no one else is in the water, and Kyoto Omuro Kadensho tags all four of its free private baths “Tattoo Friendly” (its own page, November 2026). For a public bath, Kurama Onsen’s own page says guests with tattoos are welcome, except members of organised crime groups; its entry ticket with a set meal is from US$31 a person (checked November 2026). Most other properties say nothing either way, so ask before you book.
Free cancellation until 24 hours before. The baths are separate for men and women, and swimwear is not allowed.
The general rule, in JNTO’s words

Japan National Tourism Organization puts it plainly: “Majority of the onsens in Japan prohibit tattooed guests from entering and require full nudity once you enter the bathing room,” and “it’s still best to inquire to your onsen of choice before visiting” (JNTO, checked November 2026). Its June 2024 page on tattoos suggests renting a private kashikiri onsen, which “will generally come at a small additional price and require pre-booking”, and emailing the facility to ask its rules.
What each property says
| Property | Kind of bath | On tattoos, its own page, November 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Kyoto Omuro Kadensho | Four free private baths | All four tagged “Tattoo Friendly”; no conditions stated; nothing said about the main bath |
| Kurama Onsen | Public baths only | Guests with tattoos may use them, except members of organised crime groups |
| Kyoto Umekoji Kadensho | Five free private baths | Nothing stated |
| Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada | Paid rooftop private bath; rooms with an onsen bath | Nothing stated |
| HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO | Onsen Suite; Private Onsen for guests; shared Thermal Spring in swimsuits | Nothing stated on its bath pages |
| Kyoto Takao Momijiya | Paid private baths | Nothing stated |
“Nothing stated” is not a yes. A room with its own bath, or a private bath you book, keeps you out of the shared water, but the house rules still apply to the building; write to the property and ask, as JNTO advises.
Kyoto Omuro Kadensho
The hotel stands by Ninna-ji, 2 minutes on foot from Omuro-Ninnaji station on the Randen Kitano line, and opened in July 2026 (its own pages). Its four private baths are free and open 24 hours without booking, two of natural onsen and two of plain water, and each is tagged “Tattoo Friendly” on its onsen page; it takes overnight guests from junior-high age (its own page, November 2026). Check rooms at Kyoto Omuro Kadensho .
Kurama Onsen
Kurama Onsen, in the hills north of Kyoto, answers the question in its own Q&A: guests with tattoos may use the baths, and only people tied to organised crime are turned away. It has no private bath; the baths are separate for men and women, with no swimwear and no towels in the water (its own page, November 2026). Ontabi's guided bath at Kurama Onsen, from US$76 a person (checked November 2026), is sold as tattoo-friendly in its own title.
