Arashiyama Onsen Ryokan with a Private Bath

Private onsen in Arashiyama, Kyoto: Hanaikada's rooftop private bath and onsen rooms, Suiran's onsen rooms, the Kadensho closure from 1 December 2026, day plans and an Arashiyama day that ends in a soak. Checked November 2026.

Updated November 2026

Arashiyama is the part of Kyoto where a private onsen and the sights sit side by side. Arashiyama Onsen Hanaikada, beside Togetsukyo Bridge, has rooms with their own onsen bath and a rooftop private bath; Suiran has onsen rooms; and Kyoto Arashiyama Onsen Kadensho, with five free private baths, closes from 1 December 2026 for several months (each property’s own page, November 2026). If you only have the day, Kyoto compass tour’s Arashiyama Day Tour with Train, Boat, and Onsen is from US$150 a person (checked November 2026) and ends with an optional soak in a shared onsen.

Illustration. A rooftop bath above the river and its bridge.

Hanaikada stands beside Togetsukyo Bridge, 184 m from it on foot. Its pages say its baths, the private one included, use 100% Arashiyama onsen water. The rooftop private open-air bath costs JPY 2,200 a party for 40 minutes, last entry 23:00, reserved, and is only for guests who eat or stay; it has rooms with their own open-air onsen bath as well (its own pages, November 2026).

Without a room, Hanaikada’s day plans start at JPY 4,100 for lunch and its shared baths from 11:00 to 16:00; one party a day can take a room with its own onsen bath, with lunch, from JPY 14,300, booked by phone. Day use lists the plans.

Suiran

Suiran, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Kyoto, is 958 m on foot from Hanaikada. Its Japanese rooms page describes open-air baths of natural Arashiyama onsen water in its onsen rooms, and its Presidential Suite has a private onsen bath (November 2026). The pages we read say nothing about day visitors.

Kyoto Arashiyama Onsen Kadensho: closing from 1 December 2026

Kadensho’s notice of 19 October 2026 says the hotel closes from 1 December 2026 for several months for renovation of its first floor, with the reopening date to come on its site. Until then it has five free private baths, no booking, all of heated water rather than onsen, and the Umekoji and Omuro Kadensho stay open (its own pages, November 2026). For a stay after 1 December, look at Kyoto Omuro Kadensho , near Ninna-ji, which has four free private baths, two of them natural onsen.

A day in Arashiyama with a soak

Kyoto compass tour’s day runs 4.5 to 5 hours with an English-speaking guide, at most 9 people: the Sagano Romantic Train, the Hozugawa river boat, and a walk in the bamboo grove, then an optional soak at an Arashiyama onsen. The train and boat tickets are included; the hot-spring fee, meals and getting to the meeting point are not. In winter the Sagano train may not run, and then you can take a full refund. Of its 162 newest reviews, August 2025 to November 2026, one gives three stars or fewer.

Further out, an e-ticket to Kyoto Takenosato Onsen Manyo-no-Yu, a day spa in the Rakusai area near Arashiyama with a free shuttle from Katsuragawa Station, is from US$20 (checked November 2026). It is a public bath too.
